NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- Two people have been sentenced on robbery charges relating to a 2011 murder in North Salem.
Travis Morin, a 26-year-old New Hampshire resident was sentenced to 15 years in state prison after being convicted of second-degree robbery, a class C felony and unlawful imprisonment, a class E felony, according to Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore.
Jessica French, a 26-year-old Florida resident was sentenced to six years in state prison after pleading guilty to second-degree robbery, Class C felony, according to DiFiore.
Morin and French were charged with acting with two other people, who were convicted of the murder of 65-year-old Epifanio Medina, whose body was discovered in North Salem in June 2011.
Patrick Smith, a 26-year-old Florida resident was previously convicted of second-degree murder, among other charges, was sentenced in March to 25 years to life in state prison. Charles Blanchard, a 23-year-old New Hampshire resident, also was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2nd degree, was sentenced to 18 years to life in state prison.
On June 12, 2011, two horseback riders discovered Medina's decomposing body in the woods of North Salem.
The victim, a Florida resident, had been living in New Jersey. He was known to carry large amounts of cash and wore a lot of flashy jewelry. He frequented a liquor store in New Jersey and was last seen leaving that store on June 2, 2011.
New York State Police began an investigation and on June 16, 2011, the victim was identified.
Police learned that he had been reported missing by family members on June 5, 2011 and that he had been living in New Jersey.
State Police expanded their investigation to Florida and New Hampshire, ultimately resulting in the arrest of the four defendants.
First Deputy District Attorney James McCarty, chief of Trial Operations and Assistant District Attorney Nadine Nagler of the Career Criminal Bureau, prosecuted the case.
