YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Georgia Turner, a 72-year-old Yorktown resident who was struck by a car and killed in a hit-and-run accident Thursday night is being remembered as a kind and gentle soul as Yorktown Police have arrested a suspect in the case.
Juan Luis Guevara Villatoro, a 38-year-old Jefferson Valley resident, was charged in conjunction with the accident that occurred between 5:40 p.m. and 6 p.m. on East Main Street in Jefferson Valley. Villatoro was charged leaving the scene of an accident, a felony, according to LoHud.
Turner was taken to Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt Manor where she was pronounced dead, according to police.
Villatoro, who was arraigned Saturday afternoon, was spotted after officers set up a checkpoint between Route 6 and the Taconic Parkway Saturday morning, according to LoHud.
Villatoro's 2003 Kia Sedona had front-end damage consistent with the car that struck Turner, according to LoHud. According to LoHud, police said Villatoro made incriminating statements about the accident when he was questioned.
Turner was a longtime employee at the Feed Barn, a pet store in Mahopac, where co-worker Robert Pietrolungo said she felt like a mother to him.
"All the customers loved her," Pietrolungo said. "She was really kind. It's very depressing."
Pietrolungo said he last saw Turner when she left the store at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
"Usually she says goodbye and this was the one time she didn't," Pietrolungo said. "She will greatly missed at The Feed Barn."
Turner had three adult sons, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Turner's granddaughter, Tierra-Lynn Turner, who lives in Florida, said her family is heartbroken.
"My grandma was an amazing woman," Turner said. "She had a heart of pure gold. (The driver) has no idea the pain they've caused."
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
