PATTERSON, N.Y. – A Southeast man was struck and killed in Patterson by a motorist under the influence of drugs, according to a press release from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.

Alan D. Taylor, 62, of Shore Drive, Southeast, was riding his bicycle Tuesday on Fair Street in Patterson when a 2001 Buick that had illegally driven onto the shoulder of the roadway hit him, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Ray Vanzo, 47, of Avery Road, Carmel, was driving the Buick and later determined to be under the influence of drugs, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Taylor was unresponsive at the scene and soon pronounced dead at Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel.

Vanzo did not sustain any visible injuries in the crash, but as he was being arrested claimed he was not feeling well, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Vanzo was charged with driving while impaired by drugs and with driving on the shoulder, and is being held on a $50,000 cash bond, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Additional charges against Vanzo are expected.
