LEWISBORO, N.Y. The South Salem Fire Department returned to the Presbyterian Church on Main Street for the second time in two days Tuesday night when the boiler in the basement began to smoke.
Firefighters had already responded to the church on Monday when 16 inches of water flooded church basement thanks to Tropical Storm Irene.
Pastor Chip Andrus said fire officials think that Mondays flooding brought water and/or fuel into the boiler and when power returned around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, the boiler turned on and began to smoke.
I was just getting home when it happened, Andrus said. The Boy Scouts were there they meet every Tuesday and they were going to get some things out of the basement. When they opened the door, the smoke came pouring out. If it werent for them, we probably wouldnt have discovered it right away.
Andrus said although there was no real danger, the fire department remedied the problem.
They checked it out and made sure it wasnt bad, he said. As always, they were great.
