Ruth Pierpont, Deputy Commissioner for Historic Preservation, explained in a July 29 letter that the State Review Board recommended the inclusion to the New York State Historic Preservation Officer, who agreed to add the cemetery.
The cemetery also could be added to the National Register of Historic Places. In the letter, Pierpont said the nomination will be forwarded to the Keeper of the National Register, whose approval is necessary for a national listing.
At Monday's Lewisboro Town Board meeting, Parsons mentioned the update and attributed the news to the burial of war veterans at the cemetery. According to the church's Registry of Graves, the cemetery includes veterans from the Revolutionary War, French and Indian War, and the War of 1812.
