A subtle snow turned into a gentle drizzle on Wednesday afternoon, which helped clear stubborn snow from major roadways, while muddling smaller side streets even further.
On the rails, due to weather-related problems with the overhead catenary wire on the New Haven line, Metro-North was forced to begin operating on an hourly schedule from noon until 4 p.m., when commuters were on their way back from work. The Hudson and Harlem lines were operating on a normal off-peak schedule.
In the air, there were widespread cancellations and delays caused by the weather at the Westchester County airport, prompting county officials to warn travelers to contact their airline before making the trek to the airport.
James Dempsey, who drove from Long Island to New Rochelle and then to Valhalla on Wednesday for work, said the roads had gotten progressively better.
“There were cars sliding all over the place on the [Long Island Expressway], to the point where some pulled over, and others just spun off the road,” he said. “It’s gotten better as the day went on, but some of the side roads are still a mess.”
Although slightly warmer temperatures and rain helped clear off roadways in the early afternoon, nearly a half-inch of ice is expected to accumulate Wednesday night as temperatures drop to approximately 20 degrees with freezing rain and sleet. Residents will enjoy the rare sight of the sun on Thursday, as the poor weather is expected to pass, with temperatures nearing 30 degrees.
