Possible Norovirus At Westchester Hilton Leaves 100 Sick

RYE BROOK, N.Y. -- County health department officials are still investigating a possible breakout of Norovirus at the Hilton Westchester Hotel in Rye Brook that left at least 100 people sick.

Those affected reported feeling sick after attending events at the hotel last weekend. One person was hospitalized, and was listed in stable condition, according to Caren Halbfinger, a spokesperson for the health department.

Officials believe the sickness is caused by Norovirus, a group of viruses that can cause acute gastrointestinal discomfort, vomiting and diarrhea. They will not know for sure until lab results come back next week, Halbfinger said.

Inspectors are on hand throughout the weekend to inspect the premises and make sure that hotel employees are following sanitary procedures to prevent further spread of illness. There is no indication at this time that the outbreak was caused by food, Halbfinger said. Norovirus is highly contagious, and can be spread through contact and by touching surfaces.

"Hilton Westchester has been working cooperatively with the Westchester County Department of Health regarding illnesses reported by individuals who attended events at the hotel," Hilton Worldwide said in a statement released Saturday. "The hotel is making every effort to ensure that all practices and standards are in line with safety and sanitation guidelines."
