The department issued a fraud alert on Monday warning residents that they are investigating several stolen mailboxes that were taken from throughout the city during the overnight hours on Saturday, Dec. 2.
Mailboxes that were removed include the USPS boxes at the intersections of Roxbury Drive and Central Park Avenue, North Broadway at Gateway Road and Bellvue Avenue at Roberts Avenue.
Police said that residents who recently utilized these mailboxes are advised to monitor their bank and credit accounts for signs of unauthorized activity and identity theft.
Following the stolen mailboxes, the police department offered a series of tips for residents to avoid potential cases of fraud:
- Consider transferring money via other methods;
- Drop mail containing checks directly at the Post Office or hand it directly to your mail carrier;
- If one uses a mailbox, the mail should be deposited as close to the scheduled pick-up time as possible;
- When writing a check, use a pen with pigmented ink that cannot be erased;
- Police should be called if a resident spots any suspicious activity around a mailbox.
Anyone with information regarding the stolen mailboxes have been asked to call the Yonkers Police Detective Division at (914) 377-7724.
