MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- Northern Westchester Hospital received a $5,000 grant from the Gannett Foundation to support community health outreach programs

The grant will be used for designing, translating and printing new bilingual health screening information and purchasing new health education tools.

Gannett's funding will help ensure that vulnerable, under-served neighbors have access to healthcare information, education and screenings to better understand and manage their overall health and well-being.

Northern Westchester Hospital provides essential health education and outreach through free health fairs, lectures, screenings (blood pressure, osteoporosis, cholesterol, stroke and vascular) and flu vaccines to individuals in the region.

Registered nurses, dietitians and other clinicians (some of whom are bilingual) conduct these health screenings and distribute culturally sensitive, bilingual health education materials to community members to reinforce healthcare messages and facilitate effective follow up with a primary physician.

These programs increase access to high-quality healthcare and minimize healthcare disparities in the under-served, particularly the immigrant Latino population and the general public.

Other organizations awarded funding include: The Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester, Yonkers Partners in Education, Help from People to People, Girl Scouts of the Hudson.
