GOLDENS BRIDGE, N.Y. – The newly installed cell tower on Waccabuc Road could be operational by as early as late spring and will include Verizon and AT&T service.
The addition of a fifth cell tower is expected to improve service on Route 138, from Route 121 to Interstate 684. However, residents should not expect perfect reception, warned Peter Parsons, supervisor of the Town of Lewisboro.
“It’s really good to have another cell tower, which will significantly improve reception in town,” he said. “I like that. But, I don’t want everybody to instantly think they’re going to have excellent cell service.”
The 150-feet tall tower was installed last Thursday by Homeland Towers and now awaits the two phone companies to finish the job.
The other four towers in town are at the Vista Fire Department, Leon Levy Preserve, Town Park and I-684, which is state property, but provides service to that end of town.
The problem with covering Lewisboro is that there is a lot of land with hills and dips and obstructions to transmission lines, and relatively few people, Parsons said.
“I don’t know if it’ll ever be economic to put in another tower. The town doesn’t really control this. It’s how much these companies want to invest in cell service in this town,” he said.
The location of the new tower on Waccabuc Road is ideal because it has good ground elevation, which is important to get a strong signal.
Ray Vergati, site development manager for Homeland Towers, said it can be difficult to find good locations for cell towers because you have find land with the proper zoning, find a landlord willing to lease to you, and avoid building in or near a wetlands.
“In this case we feel we’ve picked a site that is set back far from residential community and certainly offers a lot of positive aspects for a power site,” he said.
