Mount Kisco Firemen Battle Early Morning Blaze, Bitter Cold

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. – More than 60 firefighters battled an early morning blaze that took two hours to extinguish in an unoccupied home in Mount Kisco and led to two minor injuries.

A two-story, 3,000-square-foot home at 9 Crow Hill Road caught fire early Friday morning.

Police responded to a home burglary alarm at 9 Crow Hill Road early Friday morning and, instead, found a large fire. They called the Mount Kisco Volunteer Fire Department, which responded around 1:04 a.m., Chief Tom Jackson said. Extensive fire, smoke and water damage left the home uninhabitable.

Nobody was home because the two-story structure was under construction, which Jackson said made it more difficult to extinguish the fire, which spread throughout the structure.

Two responders suffered minor injuries, one falling. Both were taken to Northern Westchester Hospital. The bitter cold was another obstacle.

“The cold slowed things down because when throwing water you immediately had ice,” he said. “It made a tough job even harder. But, everybody did a very good job.”

The 65 firefighters on scene had the fire under control by 3 a.m. and then an investigation into the cause began around 5:30 a.m.

Mutual aid was provided by Bedford Hills and Millwood fire departments at the scene. Katonah and Pleastanville fire departments stood by at the Mount Kisco Volunteer Fire Departments headquarters.

The approximately 3,000-square-foot home is about 300 feet removed from the street and is not visible, Jackson said.
