SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. A 28-year-old construction worker who accidentally shot himself in the head with a nail gun was airlifted from the South Salem firehouse to Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla at around 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
South Salem Fire Chief Andrew Llewellyn said the department was just coming back from a call when a work van pulled into the firehouse parking lot with the patient in the back. Llewellyn said the man had been working at a construction site when the accident occurred and his co-workers drove him to the firehouse.
I assume it was a nearby site because they came here, but I dont know where it was exactly, he said.
Llewellyn said the man was struck by a 2 1/2-inch nail in the side of the head, which was flush to his skull. Despite the injury, the man was conscious and alert.
[The nail] went all the way in, the chief said. But he seemed to be in good condition other than that.
Fire officials immediately notified Stat Flight, which arrived at the firehouse six minutes later and airlifted the patient to Valhalla.
