Joining Southbury’s growing list of multimillion-dollar prize winners, Gerald Rutledge stepped forward this week to claim Connecticut’s first $2 million Mega Millions prize with a winning ticket for the Jan. 26 drawing.
The winning Mega Millions numbers drawn that day were 14 27 39 50 69 and Mega Ball 2. The Megaplier was 2.
Rutledge purchased his winning ticket at J&R Newtown Road Business Service, also known as the Exit 8 Shell Station at 101 Newtown Road in Danbury.
“This is the biggest prize winning lottery ticket that we’ve ever sold,” said Jarnail Dhaliwal, owner of J&R. “We are very happy for the winner and wish him good luck.” For selling the winning ticket, J&R will receive a $2,500 check from the CT Lottery.
Of the 9,473 winning Mega Millions tickets sold statewide for that date, Rutledge’s “Quick Pick” ticket was the only one sold in Connecticut that matched the first five numbers drawn. Because Rutledge added the Megaplier feature to his Mega Millions ticket for an extra $1 at the time of purchase, his $1 million prize was multiplied by two for a total win of $2 million.
In the past, three other Southbury residents were also lucky enough to claim a multimillion-dollar lottery prize. Each was a Lotto jackpot winner:
