Lost Hiker Found in Pound Ridge With Heat-Sensor Technology

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – It took several hours, but police were able to locate a hiker who had gotten lost Saturday night in Ward Pound Reservation by using heat-sensor technology.

Pound Ridge police said that Zachary Diamond, 27, of Scarsdale, became lost in the reservation early Saturday night but was able to contact a 911 dispatcher with his cell phone. The Westchester County Police searched for Diamond by helicopter, with State Police and Pound Ridge Police Department on the ground. 

“They spotted him with the helicopter using the heat sensor,” said Pound Ridge Police Sgt. Mike Armistead. “He was in a tough area.”

Armistead said the helicopter helped guide searchers to Diamond’s location.

“Once they spotted him, they used a cell phone and told him not to move,” he said.

Because of last Saturday’s snowstorm, police said the reservation’s trails were blocked with downed trees and fallen branches, making it difficult for searchers to use ATVs to get to Diamond so the search had to be conducted primarily on foot.

Armistead said when rescuers finally reached the hiker at around 9:30 p.m. he was in good condition and required no medical attention.

“He didn’t need to go to the hospital,” he said. “He was dressed for the cold weather.”
