LEWISBORO, N.Y. Tennis enthusiasts, club members and high school team members will be relieved to know that the towns tennis courts are finally about to get a much-needed renovation that has been in the works since last April.
The courts at Town Park and Fox Valley were supposed to get makeovers earlier this year. The town put out bids back in April, but the bid requests had to be withdrawn when officials realized they didnt clearly define replacing the fencing. The town put out new bid requests this summer.
According to Recreation Director Dana Mayclim, the original bid for the project was $136,000, but that did not include the specific brand of resurfacing material, a two-year warranty and card-reading security gates for the tennis courts. The new accepted bid is for $190,000.
The tennis court at Town Park will undergo crack repair and resurfacing, as will the basketball courts. The basketball courts will also receive new goals. The tennis court at Fox Valley will undergo complete reconstruction.
For that one they will have to dig everything up and start over, Mayclim said. It will also include a tennis backboard for solo play.
Town officials said the work will begin as soon as possible. They are in the process of coordinating with the schools and tennis groups in order to work around their schedules.
These courts are heavily used, said Supervisor Charles Duffy. We have to work around their schedules, but they are more than willing to accommodate us. It got to the point where they were worried about the safety of the players, so they are highly motivated [to accommodate the construction].
