Lewisboro Tennis Court Makeover Needs Makeover

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – The saga of the Lewisboro Town Park tennis court renovations took another unhappy turn this week when the town board learned cracks have appeared in the resurfacing job done last fall and repairs will be needed, making the courts unplayable until at least mid-June.

Back in April 2011, the town set out to repair and renovate the courts at Town Park and Fox Lane. The Fox Lane courts needed a total makeover, while the Town Park courts only required crack repair and resurfacing. However, the bids that were sent out at the time had to be withdrawn because they didn't adequately address replacing the fencing.

A request for new bids was sent out several months later and the contract was awarded to M&M Tennis Court Company at a cost of around $190,000. The company didn’t begin the project until September and that is likely what led to the current problem, officials said.

“The work was probably begun too late in the year,” Supervisor Peter Parsons said. “It got cold quick and it was a chaotic fall with the October snowstorm.”

As a result, the surface started cracking again. Fortunately for the town, the surface has a two-year warranty so the repairs, estimated to cost $10,700, will not come out of the town coffers.

Parsons said in order to avoid a repeat of what happen last fall, M&M will wait until the beginning of June to begin the repairs, which means the courts won’t be ready for play until about June 15.

“The Town Park courts will be unplayable for a while,” he said. “But the courts at Fox Valley are OK and the courts at Onatru were never part of this. They’re in excellent shape.”
