LEWISBORO, N.Y. – Some power finally is being restored to beleaguered Lewisboro, which virtually was blacked out in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
Supervisor Peter Parsons reported Thursday afternoon The Meadows condo complex on Route 35 in Cross River has its power back, as does Michelle Estates, also in Cross River. He said he wasn’t sure how many NYSEG customers that included.
“Cross River seems to be coming back on line and that’s good news,” Parsons said.
Nonetheless, the NYSEG website reported no power restorations in Lewisboro as of 1 p.m. Thursday.
NYSEG has been widely criticized for what some officials have a called a sluggish response to the storm. Parsons said the thinks the utility company is simply overwhelmed.
“Their public reason [for the slow response] is that the storm was so widespread,” he said. “I think that caused them to rip up the agreement we made with them after the last storms to provide each town with a liaison. That hasn’t happened. They never anticipated the extent that they’d be devastated by this.”
There are several events throughout town that have been postponed or canceled as result of the storm.
Candidate’s Night at Le Chateau, scheduled for Thursday, has been canceled and organizers are considering a new date. Ladies Night at the Vista Fire House, slated for Thursday, has been canceled. The Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps’ silent auction and casino night at Waccabuc Country Club, scheduled for this Saturday, has been postponed until Nov. 17. Trick-or-treating was canceled Wednesday night, but town officials say they will look at creating a new night for trick-or-treating later this month.
The Lewisboro Library will remain closed until power is restored. The Katonah-Lewisboro School District has canceled school for the rest of the week, but hopes to be back in session by Monday. In the meantime, the John Jay Middle School is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the remainder of the week for those who wish to use the showers and toilet facilities.
DeCicco’s Family Market in Orchard Square in Cross River remains open and is stocked with batteries of various sizes. La Familia Pizza Restaurant in Orchard Square also is open.
The Town House and three firehouses (Goldens Bridge, South Salem and Vista) are distributing dry ice and bottled water on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the blackout.
