Lewisboro Library Kicks off Summer Reading Program

LEWISBORO – The Lewisboro Library’s annual Summer Reading Program kicked off with a party Monday afternoon and organizers called it a resounding success.

“It’s going great,” said Children’s Librarian Cathy Lin, motioning to a library lawn full of kids. “We have about 40 kids signed up and we have 10 volunteers. It’s pretty cool.”

The program encourages children to read as many books as they can throughout the summer. They’re awarded “surprises” based on the number of books they read. If they read 18 books, they’ll receive a certificate of achievement.

Monday’s party was a way to attract youngsters and their parents to the library and get them to sign on. There were games, such as blind man’s bluff, bocce, and a piñata.

Some children, however, are still being convinced. Nine-year-old Carly Legenzowkski wrinkled her nose and said, “sort of” about whether she enjoys reading. She said her favorite books were Andrew Lang’s Fairy Books series and the “Dear Dumb Diary” series.

Sasha Medile, 9, said she likes reading all year round, not just in the summer.

“I like adventure stories,” she said.

The hit of the kick-off party was the ice cream, as kids clamored for a bowl of the creamy, cool treat as afternoon temperatures pushed past 80 degrees. However, the ice cream didn’t come without a catch.

“No ice cream until you sign up for the reading program,” Lin said.

They were all happy to oblige.
