New York State Counter Terrorism Zone 3 (Westchester and Putnam) will be employing Operation Safeguard measures during the Independence Day Holiday Weekend,

The measures will start on Friday, July 3 and end on Sunday evening, July 5, during which time the public may notice more police officers on patrol, Zone 3 officials said.

Westchester law enforcement agencies will be conducting periodic security checks of religious facilities, train stations, commuter parking lots, bus routes, shopping malls and public parks where holiday events may be held.

With each day, Zone 3 officials said they are learning of new tools and tactics that "individuals who intend to impair our way of life may use to advance their plans."

Zone 3 officials advise residents to be mindful of behavior that does not match the usual pattern of activity found within daily life, repeating the mantra of “If you see something, say something.”

They advise residents who observe suspicious activity not to confront the individual or individuals and do not reveal your suspicions, but do record as many details as possible and notify local police agencies by calling 911 or their direct number or call the safe nys tipline at 1-866-safenys (1-866-723-3697).

Since 2004, the goal of Operation Safeguard is to educate, promote and remind citizens that the threat of terrorism is ongoing and continued vigilance by the public, business sectors and law enforcement is essential for the public’s safety.
