Sprout, a female, is "smart, friendly, house-trained and well-behaved," according to the nonprofit. She is a graduate of Green Chimneys' program, which allows students to train and socialize shelter dogs to prepare them for adoption.

The students, many of whom have a history of negative experiences at home, at school and with peers, gain the benefit of being a caregiver while taking part in the program, the nonprofit said.

The program began at the 400 Doansburg Road campus in 2014 with two dogs. It has since placed 56 animals in permanent homes.
