County Program To Honor Local 9/11 Heroes

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – State and county officials have joined together with the Volunteer Center of United Way to help promote Serve and Learn: Westchester Remembers 9/11 , a program designed to honor local victims and heroes of 9/11. Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, along with state Assemblyman Robert J. Castelli (R, C – Goldens Bridge), who represents both Pound Ridge and Lewisboro, have thrown their support behind the project.

The group is looking for volunteers to make the project a reality.

“This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, an event that touched the lives of so many families in Westchester County and throughout the Hudson Valley,” Castelli said. “It is important that we teach younger generations about the tragic events of that day while remembering those we lost.”

Castelli noted that the community-wide call to action is designed to engage people of all ages in a wide variety of one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities.

“In keeping with the efforts being orchestrated nationally through the HandsOn Network and My Good Deed, we aim to reignite the passion for volunteerism by providing Westchester residents with a constructive way to annually remember those we lost and those who rose up to serve,” said Alisa H. Kesten, executive director for the Volunteer Center of United Way.

Over 100 nonprofit groups will participate in the event to help individuals learn how they can connect and make a difference by sharing their professional skills. Attendees will also have a chance to serve the community by volunteering in ways to help honor the memories of victims and heroes of 9/11.

“The nation came together to support one another after the events of 9/11 in unprecedented ways,” Castelli said. “It is our hope that by rekindling this sense of togetherness, we can help make our community stronger on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.”

Serve and Learn: Westchester Remembers 9/11, will take place Friday, Sept. 9, at the County Center in White Plains, 2-7 p.m., and is open to the public for free. To participate in on-site volunteer activities, visit www.volunteer-center.org/volunteers/9_9volunteer.html .
