Lewisboro Deputy Supervisor Peter DeLucia has been named the recipient of the 2011 Westchester Recreation and Parks Society's public service award.
DeLucia was presented with the award at the groups 54th Award and Scholarship Luncheon in Rye on Friday. The occasion marked the 29th time the award has been handed out since 1971.
DeLucia is also a member of the towns Recreation Advisory Council and is a liaison to the Parks and Rec Department.
DeLucia received the award for his dedication and service to the towns recreation programs over the years, including obtaining private donations for the annual fireworks show, revamping the youth leagues policies, his work with the town pool, and being a true supporter of recreation and looking for ways to improve the quality of life in Lewisboro.
It was very humbling, DeLucia said. It was awesome. You dont realize how long youve been doing it until you hear it out loud. Its a tremendous honor.
Lewisboro Supervisor Charles Duffy was on hand to read a proclamation from the town honoring the fact that DeLucia won the award.
DeLucia said his love for recreation goes back several decades.
Ive always been involved, he said. I was coaching womens softball for my wifes team 20 years ago. I also coached my kids teams and was involved with the pool. One of the issues I started with was when I found out that there was no concession stand or press box at the Little League field in the town park and worked to fix that.
DeLucia also lauded the Westchester Recreation and Parks Society, calling it a fantastic organization.
They make sure theres a wide variety of recreation available to Westchester County and that its safe and fun, DeLucia said. They are a great way to get info out to a large group of people. They make us (town government) look good.
