Contractor Withdraws Onatru Elevator Bid

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – The building company awarded the contractor to construct the elevator at the town’s Onatru Farmhouse has withdrawn its bid.

At Monday night’s Lewisboro Town Board meeting, Martin Diano, architect for the project, told the town board the Hudson Deign Build Group of Peekskill had changed its mind.

“They received two new contracts for new construction and they just felt that they would be overwhelmed,” Diano said, “so they withdrew the bid.”

The town is renovating the farmhouse in an effort to make it Americans with Disabilities Act compliant. The agencies located there, including the planning and building departments, recently re-located to offices in the Orchard Square shopping center in Cross River. The town has until the end of the year to finish the farmhouse project.

The board received three bids last week and Hudson Design was the lowest at $278,570. The other bidders were Torre Construction from Bedford Hills at $296,500 and CONSERV Construction of HIllburn, N.Y. at $397,000.

The board said it would now look to Torre Construction – the second lowest bidder – to take on the elevator job. Town attorney Anthony Mole said it would not be necessary for the town to rebid the project because Hudson Design voluntarily withdrew its bid.

“I talked to [Torre Construction] and they said they were still interested,” Diano said.

Deputy Superintendent Peter DeLucia said the time constraints surrounding the project make turning to the second highest bidder the best scenario even though the bid is nearly $18,000 higher.

“We are so crunched for time, I don’t see rebidding as a viable option,” he said.

The town will receive a federal grant of $148,500 for the elevator project, but will have to borrow the rest of the money.
