Car Collides with Meadow Pond School Bus

VISTA, N.Y. – A school bus carrying 25 students from Meadow Pond Elementary School was struck by a car while traveling on Kitchawan Road near the intersection of Mill River Road at around 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon, but first responders said there were no injuries to any of the children.

Lewisboro police would not identify the driver of the car other than to say he was a 33-year-old male from Patterson, N.Y in Putnam County. Rescue workers said he wasn’t severely injured and was walking around and coherent, but was taken to Norwalk Hospital as a precaution.

Lewisboro Police Officer Michael Armistead said no tickets were issued to the driver who was headed east on Kitchawan at the time of the collision when he lost control of the vehicle.

“No, that’s just a nasty curve there,” he said.

Parents arrived on the scene to pick up their children, telling reporters that everyone on board the bus was fine.

“The car was speeding down the road and just slid into the bus as we were making a turn,” said Olivia Ungar, a fourth grader at Meadow Pond. “Be we were OK because (the car) didn’t come all the way into the bus. But (the driver) couldn’t get his door open.”

Another student said he didn’t even realize the bus had been struck – he thought it was just stopping.

Both Vista and Lewisboro ambulances responded to the scene. The South Salem rescue truck was requested but not needed when it was determined the driver of the car did not need extraction.
