White Plains Yoga Guru Brings Locals Inner Peace

Exercise guru Joanna Rothschild has a simple mission in life: to share peace, love and yoga with all she meets. And unlike many, a hobby that began in her first yoga class 17 years ago has since turned into a life passion that has infiltrated her professional and personal lives. She now splits her time between instructing yoga at Apogee Pilates & Wellness Centers and running the clothing company of breathable exercise clothing, Our Love Yoga , with her brother Jonny.

“Yoga has influenced all aspects of my life,” said Rothschild.

On the professional side, the craft has allowed her to teach beginners of all ages how to connect their minds and bodies as they relax and invigorate their senses. She teaches parents, children and families to bond together, and even mothers-to-be during the pre-natal process.

“You’re there for the first bonding with the belly moments and there have been many women who’ve felt their first baby kicks during yoga— you feel that you’ve experience that and get to give it to them [as instructor]," she added.

Those personal rewards are not just limited to the classroom, though. After recently celebrating the second year since its conception, Our Love Yoga shipped some of its comfy tanks, bottoms and other accessories internationally to stores in Germany and Australia.

“Everywhere I go, I get filled up seeing people rocking [our clothes],” she said.

Never practiced yoga before and want to give it a try? Rothschild will be the first to tell you to come out for the relaxation, self-discipline and exercise.

“I’d love the opportunity to teach one student or bring peace for one more person,” she added.

Rothschild will lead the community in a special outdoor session, Rise and Shine Yoga, this Saturday, August 6 at 9 a.m. The class is part of Apogee’s Summer Shape-Up Series, and will be held in conjunction with John Jay Homestead’s first-time Farmer’s Market in Katonah.

“When you’re doing yoga outside you have the sounds of nature, trees and wind—all elements you are connecting with anyway,” said Rothschild.
