SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. – A South Salem leukemia survivor, eight-year-old Sabrina Marciante, will be one of this year’s honored patients at the Westchester County Light the Night event on Tuesday, Nov. 27. ( )

The event, sponsored by the Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, was originally scheduled as a walk to be held Nov. 3 in Playland Park, but was postponed due to Hurricane Sandy. The rescheduled, modified event Tuesday will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., indoors at the Westchester County Center, 198 Central Ave., in White Plains.

Those interested in participating and/or volunteering can visit or call 914-821-8362.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk funds research and support for people battling cancer. Friends, families and co-workers form teams, and millions of shoppers help by donating at retail outlets. These efforts culminate in inspirational evening walks and events in more than 200 communities each fall across North America.

Honorees such as Sabrina are meant to be examples of the sobering reality that every four minutes in the United States, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer. Every 10 minutes, someone dies from the disease. Despite advances in medical research, leukemia still claims the lives of more children and young adults under the age of 20 than any other cancer.

Funds raised from Light the Night provide support to these programs. Last year, the three Westchester/Hudson Valley Walks included more than 7,000 walkers who collectively raised $887,000. Nationally, Light the Night raised $50 million in 2011.
