Dana Mayclim is about to become the most popular aunt in Lewisboro . "Fireworks, I'm in charge of the fireworks," Mayclim, Lewisboro's superintendent for parks and recreation , said. "That's 6,000 bursts going off starting around 9:15 p.m., and I'll have the best seats in the house on the safety line 200 feet from the launching site. No wonder my niece and nephews think I'm the best of aunts that day."
Mayclim, a native of Croton, N.Y., came to Lewisboro more than 12 years ago after a course correction in college. "I was an elementary ed major at SUNY-Cortland Pi along with what seemed like hundreds of other undergrads, when I met this student majoring in recreational management. She so clearly loved it, I thought, why not?"
After graduation she worked at the Brandywine Nursing Home in Briarcliff Manor as a recreational therapist. In Hastings she was a recreation leader, overseeing the community gardens, sports clinics and special events. Her first tasks in Lewisboro involved setting up day camps and the Easter egg hunt, which she describes as "the fastest event with no injuries it's literally organized chaos for 10 minutes." Children dash around Onatru Farm Park gathering their share of 4,500 plastic eggs stuffed with candy by Lewisboro seniors.
Today, Mayclim says she has the best job in town. "I work with every age group and all kinds of sports and community organizations trying to provide them with great experiences," she said. "Even when I'm fielding complaints and we'll make mistakes and there will be complaints, no matter how hard we try and how well we think we do I can say that I work with terrific staff and that my days are never boring."
