Lewisboro Boy Scouts Hit the Appalachian Trail

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – It took 20 miles of trudging along rugged terrain on the Appalachian Trail, but members of Boy Scout Troop 1 Lewisboro successfully completed their merit badge biannual hike Saturday.

The hike began at the trailhead at Interstate 84 and Mountain Top Road in East Fishkill and ended at Hoyt Road at Route 55 near Kent, Conn. This challenging section of the Appalachian Trail has elevations of 1,100 and 1,400 feet with steep declines.

This year’s successful 20 milers included first-timers Terence Kelly, 10; Nick Steluti, 15; Matt Waldman, 18; and Jed Fink, 15. James Kelly, 15, and Liam Kelly, 14, made their second trip, while Frank Kelly, 50, a member of the Lewisboro Town Board, made his third trip on the trail. It was also the third trip on this section of the trail for troop alumnus Brendan Kelly, 19.

Many of the Scouts' parents hiked the rocky and scenic first 10-mile section of this part of the trail before breaking for the day at Route 55 just north of Pawling.
