To the Editor,
Standing up to town Democrat leaders and their candidates during last year's budget process Supervisor Duffy reversed their trend of double digit tax increases and deficit spending and began the rebuilding process which led to Standard & Poor's upgrading the Town's Credit Outlook from "negative" to "stable."
Unfortunately, at the County level, the Journal News reported that Westchester remains the highest taxed County in the USA for the fifth year running. No surprise as Rob Astorino saw his budget vetoes overridden over-and-over again by the Democrat-controlled super-majority on the County Board which is led by our local Legislator, Peter Harckham.
On September 19, the Wall Street Journal reported on the Countys federal housing settlement and how HUD is using our communities as a test case for the nation. It seems that with HUD demanding that half of the units contain three bedrooms, the projected costs have ballooned to over $100 million. Add to that the potential financial and environmental costs to local communities forced to shoulder more unfunded mandates, including special education, transportation and the effects of high density development. There were no allegations of discrimination, just alleged false claims filed by the previous Democrat County Executive, Andy Spano.
Mr. Harckham supported the settlement two years ago despite the warnings of five lawyers on the Board of Legislators and he continues to be an apologist for HUD today. He, along with Lewisboros Democratic leaders and candidates, continues to do nothing as Rob Astorino fights to preserve the rights of northern Westchester taxpayers.
