Goldens Bridge Cub Scouts Camp Out On Manhattan's Intrepid

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – The Increase Miller Cub Scout Pack 154 from Goldens Bridge had the unique experience of camping out on board ship last weekend. The troop visited the USS Intrepid and stayed overnight on Navy cots, cuddled up against nearby aircraft and awoke to 6:30 a.m. reveille.

The scouts learned about the huge aircraft carrier’s role as a brand new vessel in the Pacific during World War II. After the war the ship was converted into an attack carrier and eventually as an antisubmarine carrier during the Vietnam War. It was the Intrepid that served as a recovery ship for the Mercury and Gemini space missions. In 1982, the ship was reborn as the Intrepid Air & Space Museum and harbored in Manhattan.

While the parents and troop leaders enjoyed the views of the New York skyline, the cubs were engrossed in exploring the helicopters, jets and propeller aircraft on board. They were taught how to signal planes and even got a chance to try out the cramped quarters of a simulated Mercury space capsule.

The next event planned for the scouts is the rocket derby at Increase Miller Elementary School on May 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.
