BEDFORD, N.Y. – “This is me; this is what I’m about,” said Catherine Crier, standing outside the horse barn on her Bedford farm on a beautiful autumn Saturday while surrounded by three of her six dogs.

Crier, the author and award-winning journalist who has covered national and international news for CNN, ABC, Fox and Court TV, moved to Bedford in 1993 and has made it her home ever since.

“I’m a Texas girl and when I moved to New York City I knew I wouldn’t survive if I didn’t get some space,” she said. “I need birds, dogs, horses and frogs.”

In 1993, Crier rented a car and drove north from the city through western Connecticut and Westchester County looking for space. She found Bedford.

“I fell in love with the community, and I thought this would be an easily commutable distance [to New York],” she said.  “I’ve created my farm here with my vegetable garden, bees and horses. My next step is to build some chicken coops.”

Crier doesn’t rely on staff to do the work; she doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty.

“I grew up mucking stalls,” she said. “Being [in Bedford] is a way to maintain my sanity instead of having to listen to trash trucks in the middle of the night.”

While the distinctive aroma associated with mucking barn stalls may not bother her, the stench emanating from the current political landscape in America does. Crier has become concerned with the partisan ideology, false assumptions and dangerous rhetoric she said has permeated American politics and the media that covers it. That concern became the impetus behind her latest book, “Patriot Acts” (Simon & Schuster). Crier said there was no particular tipping point or last straw that sent her scampering to her word processor to write “Patriot Acts,” but rather a gradual and growing despair.

“I carry the seeds around with me for books or speeches until they get pushed forward,” she said. “To listen to the rhetoric and ideology and see how divorced it is from what the Founding Fathers had to say, I began to fear for our country. It had me so concerned I wanted to go back and write about the Founding Fathers and what they were about.”

Crier believes that politics have become so partisan it has polarized the process to the point where nothing can get accomplished. She points out that politicians often use the Constitution to bludgeon home their points of view, noting with irony that the document was once called “the great compromise.”

“The Founding Fathers wanted to create a level playing field,” she said. “It was an amazing moment in time. Both sides let go of their power.”

Now, she said, neither side of the aisle will let go. She contended that it isn’t the system that’s broken, but the people who work in it.

“It’s an assault on the republic and we have to defend this system of government,” she said, “because without it, all is lost.”

Crier said that when the Tea Party was originally formed, it had the right idea, “objecting to Wall Street’s bailout as Main Street crumbled.” But then, she said, the movement was co-opted by those with a social agenda – guns, gays and God – and the original message got lost.

She also notes that there’s been an attack on intellectualism and science as conservative critics often try to paint it as “elitism.” She pointed out that getting an education and possessing an intellectual curiosity used to be the cornerstone of conservative philosophy.

“When I grew up in Texas, it was, ‘You damn well better go to college,’” she said. “You were expected to contribute. They encouraged innovation, growth and development.”

Crier said she hopes the book will inspire Americans to put their country above their own self-interests and to become a patriot, not just in word but in deed.

To Catherine Crier ,

You maybe a tad bit off target but very easy on the eye's :-)

To Francis T McVetty:

It is the Tea Party that has missed the point ! I'm an Ultra-Conservative on fiscal issue's and a liberal on social issue's - - an objectively speaking as an Independent; I question both parties on the error of their ways.

1- American Universities are the number 1 reason we lead the field in research and development 2- American Universities are the number 1 in free enterprise programs
3- American Universities are the number 1 in identifying the true cause of climate change - -which by the way is not carbon polution related .
4- It is you have missed the whole agenda of the Tea party. The Tea party movement had several objectives. One, smaller Government. Two, lower taxes. Three, Free Markets. All quite wrong ! Is not the size of government it's the effectiveness and fairness that counts .Likewise taxes must be fair not necessarily lower .What good are free markets when the labor unions supported by the Tea party some how justify teachers with tenure making $120,000 per year ?
I think that you should at least know how misguided Tea party is before you comment about it.
I also disagree with you when you write " that American Universities are anti-American". Listen to what is being taught in the great universities not just the Liberal ones. For even in the most liberal still the voice of conservative thought is prevalent today.
5- America is too rich.Yes , and for a good reason - - it's our obligation to clear up this mystery for those few misguided Professor's failing to grasp the truth. America is the only NEW thing to appear in history since the dark ages. Please do not belittle education because it is not free of cost or immediately profitable ..how dim !
6- America has and still is doing bad things throughout the world..Yes - -it not all good .I remember when we sent our troops in to fight the wrong country for the wrong reason - -do you ?
7-"They are the ones charging outrageous fees to go to school " none sense . It's people like you who allow their children to study useless subjects then wonder why they can't get a job ?
8- "student loans has now reached over 1 TRILLION dollars. For what?" I'll tell you for what ! So that red china - -who produces 75,000 scientists a semester can't shine our shoes .
Lastly , It's people like Hillary "fascist"Clinton who want to take your guns away .They passed the emergency powers act so that ( had it not been for double agent Lewinsky ) we'd all be living in a fascist state by now . Call me with any questions ..before you become a puppet of the enemy Thank You

To Catherine, You have missed the whole agenda of the Tea party. It was NOT just to, as you write, " “objecting to Wall Street’s bailout as Main Street crumbled.” . The Tea party movement had several objectives. One, smaller Government. Two, lower taxes. Three, Free Markets. I think that you should at least know what the Tea party stands for before you write about it.
I also disagree with you when you write "She pointed out that getting an education and possessing an intellectual curiosity used to be the cornerstone of conservative philosophy." It seems that worked in the "old' days but academia has changed over time. It is now anti-American. Listen to what is being taught in the great universities today. America is too rich. It is polluting the atmosphere. America has and still is doing bad things throughout the world.
Academia should be being protested! They are the ones charging outrageous fees to go to school. Where are the protests? The rate of increase of a college education has risen faster than the cost of living. In fact probably twice as fast. Where is the protest against some of these universities that trash our country on a daily basis and charge these ridiculous high rates? There are students that have graduated recently and owe over $120,000 in student loans. The debt for these student loans has now reached over 1 TRILLION dollars. For what? If the present administration, with all its Harvard/Princeton/ Yale graduates are examples of a college education, we are in BIG trouble.

PatriotActs:

SteveWGTTC,
Given just a few hundred words for his piece, Bob could only mention a few points that we discussed in our hour-long conversation. I didn't 'slip' when describing our political system, as the full title of the book is Patriot Acts--What Americans Must Do to Save the Republic. As a former Republican judge in Texas and a fervent Independent today, I present ample criticism of both major parties for the myriad crises we face today (and have an entire chapter on education, including a discussion of the rocketing costs). Would love to hear your thoughts after reading the book. Hope you'll take a look!

SteveWGTTC:

Ms. Crier seems to only be pointing to problems of a partisanship as she puts it, caused by the Republicans or those on the right. This article or what she gave you to write for this article seems to me an attempt to blame the Republicans for the problems. She says she blames both sides but does not offer any specific issues that the Democrats focus on like need I say raising taxes. She mentions only the things normally associated with the Republicans and their beliefs. The Founding Fathers, the Constitution, The Tea Party, and the Intellectualism remark to make fun of people who believe in Creationism and do not believe this whole Human caused Global Warming.
I think she accidentally slipped and described the country correctly as the Republic which it is, instead of the word Democracy, preferred by most on the left. Hopefully there are more details in her book pointing out the ills of the left too. Maybe Ms. Crier should do a book on why the cost of education has gone through the roof, far higher than inflation rates. That will take some intellectualism I guess.
