Cameron Garzon, of Mount Kisco, is a rising junior at Fox Lane High School. Her $450 scholarship will defray the costs of working with the Caretta Research Project in Georgia. Garzon’s project explores the impact of light pollution on loggerhead sea turtle hatchings.
Steven Palmesi, of South Salem, is a rising junior at John Jay High School. His $550 scholarship will help pay for his research project exploring the effectiveness of stormwater bioretention systems.
The students received the scholarships during a ceremony Wednesday.
“Bedford Audubon is proud to support the future leaders in environmental research and conservation action,” Linda Burke, chairwoman of Bedford Audubon’s education committee, said in a press release.
The scholarships are awarded in the memory of Marty McGuire of Putnam County. McGuire, a young bird enthusiast, unexpectedly died in a car accident in 2007.
“Each year I look forward to receiving the scholarship applications — all the projects are so interesting, and show what passion young people have for conservation,” Janelle Robbins, Bedford Audubon’s executive director, said in a press release.
