CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- Sometimes, you just have to mix it up. Which is exactly what Peggy Raiskums is doing with her new POUND Fitness classes, starting Wednesday in Chappaqua and Katonah.
The longtime fitness instructor and Mount Pleasant resident said every five to six years, something new comes along in the fitness industry that is new and different. At one point it was spinning, then Zumba. And now, she hopes, POUND, a 45-minute full-body cardio and stress relief jam session, combining light resistance using lightly weighted drumsticks called Ripstix to simulate drumming.
By fusing Pilates, cardio, plyometrics, isometric movements and poses in one workout, she said, you raise the heart rate to a fat-burning zone, working your way to a leaner, slimmer physique and actually hear your body working (hence, the "pound" name).
"I'm hoping it’s gong to be one of the next little fitness crazes," she said. "It's already been in all in the fitness magazines, on 'The View,' 'Dr. Oz,' and so on."
"It’s just so different as you're doing lunges and core and squats all while drumming to the beat of the music," she said. "It's great for men and women of all ages and a great way to rock out your inner rock star."
For now, she is renting various spaces in Northern Westchester but hopes to eventually land in one specific spot. Her first demo class, which costs $10 and requires bringing your own yoga mat, is at Dance Emotions, 75 S. Greeley Ave. in Chappaqua on Wednesday at 10:15 a.m., with workshops at TADA of Westchester, 131 Bedford Road, Katonah on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 11:45 a.m.
Classes will officially start the week of Jan. 12 and cost $20 per class. Raiskums recommends coming at least two times a week for maximum results.
