"In our efforts to be healthy and mindful when choosing the foods we eat, we often come across many environmental food terms including local, grass-fed, organic, etc. But what do all these labels mean?" Northern Westchester Hospital registered dietician Amy Rosenfeld sheds some light on the question.

Sustainable foods is an overarching category used to describe food grown in an environmentally friendly and ethical manner, according to the USDA. Subsets of sustainable food include free range, organic, non-GMO, grass fed, and various other categories often found in produce and meat sections.

While shopping sustainably may be good for your health and the environment, it is often expensive. To offset the price of buying these premium products, Rosenfeld recommends shopping at local farmers markets and mixing in those purchases with regular grocery store items.
