Gossett’s Market Brings Quality Products To Lewisboro

SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. – Farmers markets are some of the most popular places to be this summer, and Gossett’s Farm Market in South Salem is no exception. The market, which is held year-round at Gossett Brothers Nursery, originated in the fall of 2008 from a smaller market operated by Pat Imbimbo, owner of New England Farms. Imbimbo was searching for a location to hold a year-round market, and Tom Gossett, owner of the nursery, offered to help. Gossett’s Market usually features around 14 vendors who sell products ranging from cheeses to homemade jellies to hand-beaded jewelry.  Traditional farm products can also be found from vendors, such as Newgate Farms.  Newgate Farms, a family-run organization founded in the 1930s, operates in East Granby and Windsor, Conn. and offers a variety of fresh produce as well as flower arrangements.  “About five or six years ago the owners started selling with community markets that work in the area,” said Lyle Codman, a 6-year employee of the company. Eventually, Newgate Farms was put in contact with Gossett’s and began making frequent appearances at the market.  On a hot day, customers gravitate toward Go-Go Pops, a company that makes fresh fruit ice pops. “They’re made by hand in Cold Spring,” said employee Julie Marcinak. “We use organic ingredients and we don’t add a lot of sugar—they’re mostly fresh fruit.” The company makes almost 100 flavors, but chooses about 10 flavors to sell at the market and at their Cold Spring shop. Customers can choose from fruity flavors such as mango-strawberry and Green Faerie, a blend of avocado and kiwi, or creamy flavors like pumpkin pie.    For home-baked sweets, visit Maura & Nuccia, an Italian dessert company based in Tarrytown.  “Our recipes are old family recipes from Tuscany,” said Teresa Celsa, one of the co-owners of the company. “We decided at one point we would share them and make it into a business.” Maura & Nuccia, which was formed four years ago by Maura Riso with the help of her sister-in-law Nuccia, prides itself in baking quality Italian pies (crostate) and biscotti with natural ingredients, along with gluten-free options. Customers are welcome to try samples of the desserts. The dedication of these vendors is of the main reasons behind Gossett’s pride and passion in his company. “It’s rare to have such a wholesome activity,” he said. “You’re surrounded by all these hard-working merchants, and to hear their stories while they raise their families is amazing.” The market is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine.
