SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. - Have you ever wondered what its like behind the walls of some of the most elegant homes and mansions throughout Lewisboro and its surrounding towns?
On Sept. 30, youll have the opportunity to find out while helping to raise money for the Wolf Conservation Center at the same time.
Westchester home owners have opened their doors to Wolf Conservation Center supporters once again to help raise money for the local nonprofit organization with the third annual Green Homes & Great Estate House Tour.
After checking in at Camp Runamuk in South Salem, the 68-acre estate that was a highlight of the center's first house tour, guests will tour a variety of unique homes at their leisure. This year's tour also includes a gourmet lunch stop.
Many homes on the tour were built or renovated with the specific green intention of conserving or reusing historic elements, and leaving the natural surroundings as undisturbed as possible.
Among the homes are a sprawling and historic North Salem mansion, the John June Italianate Colonial family home circa 1842, a 19th century Katonah home retrofitted to go green, and, back by popular demand, the green Octagon, which now has tiered gardens tumbling down to Lake Truesdale. The tour also will feature a working northern Westchester horse farm that features a magnificent barn.
Whether designed with the specific green intention of conserving historic elements, or conceived on a grand scale with unlimited creature comforts and elegant decor, the homes on this year's tour have something for everyone, said Deb Heineman, executive director for the Wolf Conservation Center.
