Burger Barn In Somers Gives New Look To Homestyle Favorites

SOMERS, N.Y. -- When customers asked for more comfort food at his parents' fine-dining restaurant, Justin Tesone realized it might be time for a change.

The Burger Barn in Somers was previously known as "Seasons." It is Tesone's reimagining of the restaurant run by his parents, Joe and Linda.

Tesone, 29, now owner of the restaurant, decided to add a more laidback flair to the location, redecorating it and redoing the menu.

The new restaurant opened on April 15.

"The motto of our restaurant is 'Live and Let Loose.' You can come here, forget about the outside world, have a good meal and a cold beer. Our menu items have fun names, too," he said.

Tesone graduated in 2002 from Somers High School, where he played lacrosse, a sport he also played at the Division I level at Siena College. When he graduated from Siena in 2006 with a degree in marketing, he was unsure of where to begin.

He opened a series of restaurants in New York City known as Empanada Joe's, but they have since closed. He then moved back up to Somers to rework his parents' restaurant.

"Our regulars would always come here for comfort food. So I decided to refocus the menu on that," he said. "Some people were sad to see Seasons go, but most people have really liked the new look."

The restaurant focuses on burgers -- hence the name. Each of the burgers (beef, turkey or veggie) is hand-packed fresh on-site in the kitchen, overseen by Executive Chef Osaes Salguero.

"We try to put our own spin on every dish to make it a little more creative," Tesone said.

He said the customer favorite is the G.O.A.T, or "Greatest of All Time," burger -- which is a half-pound of Angus beef on a potato bun, served with melted goat cheese and arugula with a side of french fries ($15).

If you aren't interested in burgers, the menu also offers entrees like salmon and ribs, along with handheld sandwiches. 

The full bar, managed by restaurant manager Jeff Rosolen, carries 14 lines of draft beer, 10 of which are rotating craft beers. Many are from New York, including Southern Tier, Ithaca and Captain Lawrence. It also carries 12 imported and domestic bottled beers.

The bar carries red and white wine on tap from Long Island.

"People are skeptical about wine on tap," said Tesone, "But it keeps it fresh and it's environmentally friendly."

Additionally, 10 wines from California, Argentina and Italy are served.

The restaurant runs specials during the week, offering a burger, salad and appetizer not on the menu. However, weekend are their most popular days, with live music, comedy shows and trivia.

Takeout, on-site and off-site catering are available.

The Burger Barn is open Sundays to Thursdays from noon to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. All major credit cards are accepted.  

The Burger Barn is at 289 Route 100 in Somers.
