CROSS RIVER, N.Y. You can join in the events to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Trailside Nature Museum at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Festivities include tours, a book signing and a tree-planting ceremony.
The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with a guided tour of the Reservation from the museum to the meadow parking area by curator Jason Klein and naturalist Taro Ietaka.
At 11 a.m., there will be a tree dedication in the meadow, which will replace the 300-year-old oak tree that was felled three years ago during a storm.
A light lunch will be served at noon with musical entertainment.
At 1 p.m. there will be a 75th anniversary dedication ceremony, followed by a book signing by local author Bernd Heinrich, whose titles include Life Everlasting: The Animal Way of Death and Mind of the Raven: Investigations and Adventures with Wolf Birds.
The Trailside Nature Museum, established in 1937, is one of the oldest of its kind in the United States. The museum is home to a large collection of mounted animals, American Indian artifacts, educational exhibits, child-friendly interactive displays and nature-oriented artwork.
The celebration is sponsored by Westchester County Parks and the Friends of Trailside Nature Museum and Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. Admission is free. Parking at the reservation is $5 for park pass holders and $10 for those without a park pass. Registration is required. Call Jason Klein at 914-864-7322 to register.
It is situated on the 4,400-acre Ward Pound Ridge Reservation at Route 35 and Route 121 South in Cross River.
