New Canaan's Grace Farms Plans To Commemorate 9/11 Anniversary

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- “VOICES Public Discourse Initiative: Commemorating the 15th Anniversary through Remembrance, Renewal, and Resilience" is coming to New Canaan on Monday, Sept. 12.

Grace Farms Foundation and Voices of September 11th will co-host this event, commemorating the 15th Anniversary of 9/11 and exploring current national preparedness and the complex issues surrounding recovery from acts of mass violence.

The event is free, but registration is required and can be done by clicking here. A limited number of lunches are available for $10 with pre-registration.

The program will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The program will begin with a reflection to commemorate the 2,977 lives lost in the terroris attacks on 9/11. As part of the discussion, distinguished speakers will provide important insights into the long-term impact of 9/11 and the current challenges the nation faces with regards to terrorism.

Participants will provide their personal perspectives on the question "How can we best prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from acts of terrorism and mass violence?"

Here's a preliminary schedule:

  • 9-9:30 a.m. -- welcome, commemorative candle-lighting service
  • 9:30-10 a.m. -- interview with U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal
  • 10-10:45 a.m. -- "Personal Reflections: Responding to and Recovering from Acts of Terrorism" -- Mary and Frank Fetchet, Voices of September 11th, 9/11 family members; Bonnie McEneaney, 9/11 family member and author of "Messages"; Brian Lavigne, 9/11 survivor
  • 10:45-11 a.m. -- break
  • 11 a.m. to noon -- "Preventing Another 9/11: The Way Forward" -- U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy and U.S. Rep. Jim Himes
  • 12-1 p.m. -- "Global Threat Assessment: Progress Report" with Scott Bates, former senior policy adviser to the U.S. House of Representatives' Select Committee on Homeland Security (post 9/11), author of "Winning the War on Terror"; John Gannon, former CIA deputy director for Intelligence, ex-Chairman of the National Intelligence Council and first staff director of the House Homeland Security Committee; James Kreindler, attorney and co-chair of the plaintiffs' committee in the 9/11 litigation against the financiers and sponsors of al-Qaeda; and Ambassador Tim Roemer, 9/11 Commissioner, former Ambassador to India

VOICES was founded in 2001 to provide information and support to 9/11 families, responders and survivors, and to commemorate the lives lost and to promote national preparedness. For more information, visit its website.

The VOICES Center of Excellence for Community Resilience Initiatives also conducts research and training as well as assists communities impacted by other tragedies.

The Grace Farms Foundation was established in 2009 as nonprofit private operating foundation. It supports initiatives in the areas of nature, arts, justice, community and faith, and encourages participation on local, national and global levels. Grace Farms is publicly-usable 80-acre property.
