Sherding, Power Score Twice in Eagles Hockey Win

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville hockey team was preparing for a grueling week with four games in five days.

The Eagles were hoping to win all four, however, after opening with a triumph of Yorktown, Suffern defeated them Tuesday. So, instead of an undefeated week, the Eagles were looking to close out with wins over White Plains and Clarkstown.

Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville received two goals each from defenseman Frankie Sherding and Matt Power in a 6-2 victory over White Plains Thursday at Ebersole Ice Rink. The Eagles improved to 9-3 and conclude the week with Clarkstown Friday at the Palisades Center in West Nyack. Ian Palfrey added a goal and two assists.

The victors scored three in the first period and added three more in the second.

“We wanted to come out and go hard at them,” said Sherding, a senior at Eastchester. “Last year, we lost to White Plains twice.”

Sherding opened the scoring with 4:54 remaining in the first period, snapping a wrist shot from the point. Peter Donahue doubled the lead to 2-0 two minutes later and Sherding assisted on Palfrey’s goal with 18 seconds on the clock.

“We were playing fast and we were able to take it to them,” Sherding said. “We got a lot of good shots on net and had a lot of good opportunities.”

Even with a three-goal lead, the Eagles kept the intensity high and continued controlling the game. Power had his goals, sandwiched around Sherding’s score, in the second period.

“Going 3-1 is big because we want to make sure we get a high seed in the seedings for sectionals,” Sherding said.

Following their game with Clarkstown, the Eagles have a few days off before returning to the ice against New Rochelle on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
