East Meets West At Katonah Museum Of Art's Lethal Weapons Exhibit

KATONAH, N.Y. -- Legendary Japanese artist Ushio Shinohara added drama and action to the opening of the Katonah Museum of Art's new exhibit: "Lethal Beauty: Samurai Weapons and Armor," on display until Jan. 4.

The special performance, which took place in the garden Oct. 11, was a playful send-up of “action painting” a la Jackson Pollock, playing off themes of humor, endurance, and history. This "boxing-painting" is only the fourth Shinohara has ever created in the U.S.

Shinohara, whose work has traversed many styles and mediums, is a towering figure who has participated in some of the most significant moments of postwar art, passing through phases of Pop, performance, and Neo-Dada.

The "Lethal Beauty" exhibit includes 63 works by master craftsmen from the 13th to 20th centuries and features five full sets of armor, masks, helmets, and warrior hats. It was curated by Andreas Marks, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Collection of the Clark Center with the tour organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

In addition, you'll find a kimono "exhibit within the exhibit" along with educational tools in the children's Learning Center.

The Katonah Museum of Art is at 134 Jay St.  Click here for more information or call 914-232-9555.
