SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. – St. John’s Episcopal Church in South Salem will host the first annual South Salem Church Tavern Biathlon on Sept. 5.

The race will consist of a 6.5-mile bike route and a four-mile run. One of the main features of both courses is a steep trip up Church Tavern Road. The road was named after St. John’s Church because the church functioned as a tavern during part of its life in the late 1700s.

The race begins at 10 a.m., rain or shine, at St. John’s Church at 82 Spring St. The course can be done individually or as a two-person relay team.

To register for the race or view the detailed courses, log onto www.raceit.com and search for “church tavern.” The fee is $25 for an individual and $30 for a team. All finishers will receive a medal and winners will receive pewter tankards. For more information, contact brian.stempel@gmail.com.
