WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Even scattered rain showers could not dampen the mood of art aficionados in White Plains on Saturday, May 31, as they perused fine arts and crafts at the annual Outdoor Arts Festival in Tibbets Park.

This year marks the 52nd annual juried show, which features artists from around the tri-state area showing off their finest jewelry, handicrafts, artwork, snacks and other crafts.

Each year, the all-volunteer, non-profit festival raises money for art scholarships given to White Plains High School seniors who are interested in pursuing the arts in college. In all, $13,000 in scholarships were awarded to Carolyn McCabe, Hannah Papadakos, Jackie Caceres, Margaret Marotta, Josephine Adler and Tyeese Melton this year.

Longtime White Plains resident Marsha Gunney said that she and her husband, Jim, have attended the Outdoor Arts Festival nearly every year for a decade.

“It’s a good way to kick off the summer, get outside, stretch your legs and look at some beautiful artwork,” she said. “We like to talk to some of the artists and people selling the pieces and get the background on some of the more unique booths.”

The festival continues on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Artist Amalia Flaisher, who makes sand and water creations in glass, said that she was enjoying the festival on Saturday, even if they had to duck for cover during a few small spells of rain.

“The weather has been wacky. It’s sunny and warm one minute, then it downpours for five minutes. Reminds me of Florida,” she said. “It’s been a great first day of the festival and I’m definitely looking forward to (Sunday).”
