GOLDENS BRIDGE, N.Y. – Earlier this month, as the temperatures dipped into the 20's and a blizzard loomed ominously on the horizon, Maggie Nader went about getting her frozen yogurt shop ready to open just as if it were the middle of summer.
Nader launched the shop – Maggie May’s Frozen Yogurt – late last year just as winter was setting in. She was unfazed by the weather forecast of an impending snowstorm.
“Considering that it's wintertime, the reception here has been fantastic,” she said.
The shop in the Goldens Bridge Shopping Center is Nader’s second store. She opened a Maggie May’s in Scotts Corners in Pound Ridge last summer. The success of that store allowed her to expand.
“Pound Ridge [business] has been extremely good,” she said. “The community there has come out and supported us. All the [holiday] markets they have and the Harvest Fest have helped boost our visibility and sales there. It’s everything you want for a start-up business.”
But Nader, who currently lives in Pound Ridge, is a native of the Katonah area and attended Katonah-Lewisboro schools. She thought it would be the perfect place to open her second store.
“That’s what attracted us,” she said. “I lived in the area a long time and people recognize me.”
But there were also some strategic marketing reasons for choosing the Goldens Bridge location.
“Pound Ridge is a destination store, but here in this shopping center you may not come here to buy yogurt; you come for some other reason and then say, ‘let’s stop in and get some,’” she said. “There’s a Subway and a Dunkin’ Donuts here and people are drawn to those and end up visiting us too. The guys at Portafino’s [Pizza] love us and they send their customers down here all the time.”
Maggie May’s is a family affair – Nader runs the two stores with the help of her sons, Chaz and Michael Volpe.
Chaz said one of the reasons the store maintains a steady business throughout the winter is its extensive menu of smoothies.
“The smoothies are becoming a big hit here,” he said. “It’s something that makes us a little different [than other ice cream and yogurt parlors].”
Maggie May’s smoothie menu features several concoctions created for those trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. They have power smoothies, organic wheatgrass smoothies and protein shakes. They also feature a Smoothie of the Week, such as the “Popeye,” which is made from spinach, celery, apples, apple juice, vanilla yogurt and protein powder.
“These smoothies have really sustained us in the winter months,” Nader said, looking out the window and eying the leaden skies that portended the promise of snow. “But I am looking forward to summer."
