Maggie May's Yogurt Shop Menu Warming Up In Time For Fall

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- The dog days of summer are coming to an end but the menu at Maggie May's Frozen Yogurt and Ice Cream in Pound Ridge is just heating up.

Maggie Nader, of Maggie May's Frozen Yogurt, adds the finishing touches on a sweet crepe, the latest addition to the Pound Ridge dessert shop's menu.

Instead of hoping to scrape by during the colder months ahead, the owners of the shop at 73 Westchester Ave. are looking to thrive. To do so, Patrick Metel and Maggie Nader are adding crepes, coffee and other items to keep Pound Ridge residents warm over the winter.

Metel said the pair learned last winter, their first at the shop, that people are still looking for a warm, inviting atmosphere but they're not craving frozen yogurt and ice cream. After celebrating their one year anniversary this year, Metel and Nader said they wanted to keep giving residents the treats they craved any time of year.

"This town had nothing before in terms of frozen yogurt and ice cream and the reception has been phenomenal," Metel said while taking a break following a parade of customers coming into the store. "We have people that not only come from Lewisboro and South Salem, but people that are coming all the way from Danbury and Yorktown for our milkshakes. And we want to offer more to keep them coming back when it gets colder."

Maggie May’s offers 24 flavors of homemade ice cream, frozen yogurt and the recently added popular fruit smoothies. The products have all been big sellers this summer, Metel and Nader said.

"What keeps me coming back is the constantly great service and the cookie dough ice cream," said 11-year-old Ariella Mendes, of Pound Ridge.

Nader said she's confident the smoothies and some of the other treats will remain popular over the winter and would be enough to help them "get through," but she's looking to do more than that.

"Our (summer) season is a relatively short one depending on Mother Nature," Nader said. "So we need to create an environment where customers will want to come in all year-round and take a little time to enjoy and relax, even on a cold blistery January day, and that is sweet crepes, with a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate."

For some customers, like Terry Bevilacqua of Credit View Incorporated in Pound Ridge, Maggie May's will continue to be an everyday destination.

"I had always driven into New Canaan for lunch every day because sadly Pound Ridge didn't have much to offer. One day I was swamped and I gave them a try and I've been hooked on their healthy smoothies every day, even on the weekends," she said, adding that she picks up smoothies for her Bedford, South Salem and Mount Kisco employees. "Both of my sons are nutritionists and they told me to be careful because some healthy food really isn't. But the (Maggie May's smoothies) fill me up and I haven't put weight on. As soon as they open up, I'm there. I've been drinking them every day for almost three months and I'm feeling and looking better than ever."

For Carolynn Sears, of Pound Ridge, there are few other places in the area that have everything that Maggie May's offers.

"I'm so happy to have something in our community that offers genuinely good food and desserts," Sears said. "They are such wonderful people and the ice cream is the best I've had."

The local popularity has allowed Nader and Metel to open a second location in Goldens Bridge and they plain to unveil a new Juice Bar and other items in the coming months.
