Cross River’s Treat Frozen Yogurt Branches Out

CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – Lovers of Treat Frozen Yogurt rejoice! You no longer have to travel to the popular retail shop in the Orchard Square shopping center in Cross River.

Last week, Treat's owners began making their peanut butter-flavored yogurt available at a few local markets and delis, and plans are in the works to add even more.

“We were trying to think up ways for us to branch out when we came up with the concept,” said co-owner Lisa Pizzurro. “Peanut butter [flavor] is really popular and we wanted our customers to have access to it all the time.”

Treat has even added a marketing twist: The yogurt is sold in containers that look like peanut butter jars.

“We thought that was a cute idea,” Pizzurro said. “We did a lot of research on packaging starting about six months ago and we finally started getting it in the stores last week.”

Local retailers now carrying Treat’s peanut butter-flavored yogurt include Greenwich Produce in Vista, Spring Street Country Market & Deli in South Salem and William Nicholas & Co. in Katonah. More are to be added each week.

“It’s a little pilot program to see where it goes,” Pizzurro said. “We just started, so we really have no idea how it will do.”

Pizzurro also sells the peanut butter yogurt in the peanut butter-style jars in her own shop and says that if those sales are any indication, then the shop’s effort to branch out will indeed be successful.

“I’ve got a feeling where we are going because we have to restock that case all the time,” she said.

If the peanut butter flavor does well, Pizzurro said, Treat will consider adding more flavors in the other stores.

“Our plain tart flavor has a cult following, and the coffee is very popular, too,” she said.

Treat peanut butter yogurt has no saturated or trans fats, no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives, and is gluten-free, Pizzurro noted.

Located in the lower level of Orchard Square Shopping Center, at the intersection of Routes 35 and 121, Treat offers low-fat and nonfat frozen yogurt with optional fresh fruit and candy toppings, as well as smoothies, parfaits, coffee, tea, cappuccino and lattes.

There is an outdoor patio area, cellphone service for Verizon customers, and free Wi-Fi. Treat is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, and can be found online at http://www.treatbrands.com and on Facebook.
